Shakespeare once wrote, Ã¢â¬Å"WhatÃ¢â¬â¢s in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other name would smell as sweet.Ã¢â¬ I would have to disagree with JulietÃ¢â¬â¢s assertion that a name is a meaningless convention, and I think Brian Friel would as well. It is a concept addressed in his play Translations, set at a time of change for his native Ireland, when the country itself is on the cusp of submission to the imperialism of England. Two significant colonial events are taking place: the implementation of the National School System which replaced locally-run hedge schools like the one in which the play is set, as well as the remapping of Ireland and anglicising of place names by the British. To translate something means to change it from one condition to another, or adapt it from one system or language into another; indeed this metaphor can be applied to this play but also to Irish history. In this paper I will discuss this play as an examination of language as a defining characteristic of a particular culture and its consequent power as a colonizing tool, the way language and communication can manifest themselves as positive or negative influences and how Friel exposes the violence, figurative and literal, suffered by the Irish people as a result of these translations. The English colonizers are using language in a negative capacity, as a vehicle to exert their power over Ireland. They claim that the renaming of places is being done Ã¢â¬Å"to advance the interests of Ireland,Ã¢â¬ (31), when in fact it is a step to eradicating the Gaelic language. While the English may not be enslaving the Irish or moving them all to reservations, as in the case of Canadian and American First Nations peoples, this is an example of a more subtle, but equally as damagin... ...slating a story (and struggling with the translation of it) that celebrates the triumphs of the Roman Empire, and written in Latin, the language of the conquering Romans. The irony of this final scene is that Translations is a play written by an Irish playwright, but written and performed in English, the language of IrelandÃ¢â¬â¢s conquerors. The message of Translations is simple: language is something much bigger than a way to communicate. Language is at the cornerstone of identity, whether it personal identity or that of an entire nation. To attempt to eradicate the language of a particular place is a crime against its character and legacy. Given IrelandÃ¢â¬â¢s unique colonial history and the challenges it still faces today in regards to the preservation of its culture and language, it is easy to see why this play has become such an important piece of Irish culture.

A fear of something may begin as an involuntary response that is then reinforced through experience. Fears that arise out of experience may be based an isolated event, or a recurring event that reinforces the behavior. This experience which causes the fear can be analyzed through classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and cognitive-social learning. For example, an individual with a fear of dogs may have had a natural fear without any negative experience which then may be reinforced through actual negative situations. There may not be an explanation of why this fear develops just as a person may have distaste for certain foods, types of music, or specific hobbies, however circumstances may reinforce the fear that commenced without a definitive cause. Someone may have a fear but the fear may not necessarily be one that exists long term when reinforced with positive reinforcements it can be diminished or not so debilitating. This paper will discuss a particular individual, or sub ject, and her experiences which led to intense fear of dogs, that then diminished as a result of a long periods of positivity in her interactions with dogs. Classical Conditioning Ã¢â¬Å"Classical conditioning helps explain such diverse phenomena as crying at the sight of a bride walking down the aisle, fearing the dark, and falling in love.Ã¢â¬ In other words, having a particular experience or series of experiences brings about a permanent change in behavior. The subject as a child had a natural fear of dogs which could be be attributed to lack of interaction, and feeling intimidated by their size, which formed a feeling of danger. Another unconditional stimulus to reinforce this fear is that dogs bark, and their behavior can be unpredictable, which can instill a sense of fear and danger. These natural fears became conditioned through reinforcement from the subjectÃ¢â¬â¢s parents to be cautious around barking dogs in an attempt to protect her from possible harm by an unfamiliar dog. This reinforced barking to be a sign of aggression. Therefore the subject associated barking with dogs being aggressive causing fear and anxiety also known as a conditioned r esponse. Operant Conditioning Ã¢â¬Å"Operant Conditioning is learning in which a voluntary response is strengthened or weakened, depending on its favorable or un-favorable consequences.Ã¢â¬ The fear was a negative reinforcer on two occasions when the subject witnessed dogs biting others, and the attacks were un-provoked. Both of these dogs barked before the incidents occurred. Although the fear was reinforced through these negative situations, years later the subject was continuously exposed to dogs and was able to develop a better understanding of their behaviors and interactions with humans. These positive interactions alleviated most of the anxiety and debilitating fear she once experienced in the presence of dogs. Through continued interactions the subject was able to better understand the reactions of the dogs were reasonable in response to the particular circumstances the dogs perceived based upon their natural instinct to protect. Over time a better understanding of a dogs aggression and the subject realized that not all dogs bite in all situations. Cognitive Social Learning Ã¢â¬Å"Cognitive Social Learning is an approach to the study of learning that focuses on the thought processes that underlie learning.Ã¢â¬ The subject overtime learned that most dogs are not taught to be aggressive because she was constantly put in situations to be around them without negative results. With following categories, the main theme of the study was to understand how the participant of type 2 diabetes make it all work. Category 1 Findings Self-Care Behavior Category one findings subcategorized how participants managed diabetes with monitoring blood glucose, diet, cultural influences, exercise and intake of medication. (articles 1) When participants were asked to about the diet and cultural influences, all participants were aware that they need to alter their diet for diabetes. In fact, participants were accommodated with diet when visiting family and relatives. This finding shows that Hispanic/Latino understand the type 2 diabetes diet alterations that needs to be made on daily basis. Most of the participants stated that they knew that medication will help them regulate the insulin level but they encountered a financial challenge to obtain medications. Majority of participants were used to monitoring the levels of glucose on a daily basis and knew what caused the rise of glucose levels. Also, one of the puzzling story was when one participant lost his job and benefits do to depression after finding out his diagnosis. Employment issue made it hard to manage home, work and diabetes. Another huge problem that participants came across was finding health care resources when they needed. Many stated that they turned to family, friends and church asking to help find free or low-income services to obtain medication and supplies to meet their basic need. Nobody from participants stated that they turned to primary care services to get help. Lastly knowledge about diabetes self-management and mechanics of healthcare service of category number 2 was a significant issue. Participant understood that they are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and that they needed to alter their eating habits and exercise but they did not have adequate knowledge about self-management. Participants understood the affects of having or not having Medicaid or Medicare but they did not understand the regulation for accessing these resources. Deficiency of understanding the healthcare mechanism and cost involvement some of them postponed getting the medications and supplies. Additionally, the health literacy and not good coordination of health services played a big role in obtaining the right resources. Category 3 Challenge with Support System Three subcategories challenge that participants encountered were family support, spiritual connections and support from faith communities. Seventy percent of participants stated that they did not get financial support from family and that they worked to cover their needs. Some stated that they were not able to even work to support their fa mily because of diabetes. Many asked for family support to help with shopping, cleaning house, and transportation. In addition, family members of participants knew the financial burden having diabetes but did not do much about the use of income. Moreover, it was evident from interviews of some participants that the family had very little accommodations for finances, physical activities. On the other hand, some participants felt the burden if the family members were helping out. The spiritual connections and faith from community had a positive impact on the participants. Some stated that they relied on God and his healing. Others were seeking for support from church members to be comforted, listened, prayed for and emotionally and financially supported. Conclusion Based on the findings, it is evident that self-care behavior, support mechanism and limited resources issues are still present in our society and they need to be addressed in order to decrease type 2 diabetes disease. As healthcare workers we have the opportunity to make the difference in peoples lives. According to the study, there are some recommendations that were made to make these differences. First, nurse need to see situations that needs to be address on self-care behavior. The number of English Language Learners has increased at a rapid rate over the last decade and will double in the upcoming twenty years. With growing changes in student demographics, one must question if changes should be made to teacher training to better prepare them to step into the classroom.
